Orbitsound, the acclaimed British audio technology brand whose unique spatial stereo technology wowed critics in 2009, is delighted to introduce its T4 Radiopod. Featuring much more than the average digital radio or iPod dock, the latest in the Orbitsound range delivers remarkable, realistic stereo sound quality from thousands of digital radio stations straight to your home – and it looks stunning, too.

The scope and quality of digital radio has increased fast over recent years, and the light, portable T4 uses Wi-Fi to give users access thousands of new stations - and old favourites - from around the world. Push-button controls and clear dot-matrix display allow for easy search of internet radio and podcasts, while the compact and durable design means you can enjoy all this at home or on the move. Everything from music – be it rock, pop, metal or classical – to talk and sports radio, can be heard in exceptional depth and clarity by the whole family. And of course, if you prefer to keep total control of your audio, a built in docking station for your iPod will make your mp3s sound better than ever before.

The fantastic sound quality delivered by the T4 comes courtesy of Orbitsound’s own spatial stereo technology. Thanks to a mixture of unique patents and the application of heavyweight scientific principles to the positioning of speakers within the unit, the T4 produces incredible, true stereo sound throughout the whole room, wherever you’re standing. And best of all, the competitively priced T4 Radiopod proves that high quality and superior design for your home can also be affordable.

‘The popularity of digital and internet radio really has exploded in the last few years,’ explains Ted Fletcher, founder of Orbitsound and creator of its unique spatial sound technology. ‘But while many of us have got used to finding and listening to podcasts, we often hear them through the inferior speakers of our desktop and laptop computers. With the T4 Radiopod, digital stations and podcasts get the great sound quality they deserve, alongside a neat and stylish design.’

The T4 Radiopod features a clock (with manual setting, and auto setting from internet radio) along with an alarm and snooze facility. It includes DAB, internet and FM, all with 10 presets each, and also a DAB+ function. The inbuilt docking station allows for iPod and iPhone input and charging.

Whether you drop off to acid jazz or wake to Ukranian metal, there's hardly a station the Radiopod won't pick up through its DAB, FM and internet radio connections, and it has an iPod dock too. It plays music with a convincing stereo effect from its single speaker, thanks to British-designed technology that feeds sound out to the left and right of the unit as well as through the centre. It's an impressive performance from a bedside box the size of two beer cans

Orbitsound T4 Radiopod: A neat wireless digital radio and iPod dock
By Kevin Lynch, 9 July 2010

Following on from Obitsound's T12 home cinema system, which created a super-wide sound from one speaker, comes this neat wireless digital radio and iPod dock. It can stream internet radio stations and podcasts over wi-fi while supporting both DAB and DAB+ digital radio broadcasts.

The T4 is quite pricey and not exactly the most exciting-looking piece of kit, while the faux-stereo effect is, unsurprisingly, not as profound with this much smaller, bedside table-sized, unit. However, it still delivers a much larger sweet spot for hearing 'stereo'
than any similar music system of this size

Though it looks like an alarm clock, and indeed performs the functions of one, this is oh so much more. Wi-fi technology gives you access to thousands of radio stations, and whether listending to your docked iPod or Radio 1 the sound quality is awesome

Orbitsound’s “spatial stereo” applied to a cute DAB and WiFi Radio

The Orbitsound T4 Radiopod will compete with your microwave for the title of the most technological item in your kitchen. It’s intended as a hi-tech replacement for your kitchen or spare room radio, as it incorporates a Wifi/DAB/FM radio as well as an iPod/iPhone dock. It also incorporates Orbitsound’s “spatial stereo” technology, which deviates from traditional two-speaker setups in an attempt to create a more natural sound.

This new approach to stereo, which incorporates side-facing speakers that fire sound outwards works brilliantly on a speaker for a huge room. The T4 is a somewhat different proposition, as it’s only about the size of a bookend.

That said though, the sound is really good – bright and even. The other advantage Orbitsound claims over conventional stereo is the absence of a stereo sweet spot – spatial stereo means that the music sounds the same wherever you stand in the room.

This is absolutely apparent with the T4 (though we wonder how many people deliberately stand in the stereo sweet spot when doing the washing up). In use, the T4 is good, but with no remote control it feels a bit labored, particularly when setting up the WiFi. You should only have to do this once, though. There are buttons around the edge of the top of the unit, and it’s easy to press the wrong one.

It also has two alarms,  which can be set to wake you up with any of the radio or iPod/iPhone options. Thankfully, these are very straightforward to set up using the onscreen prompts

iPad & iPhone User says…..

The T4 may not be the ideal size for showing off Orbitsound’s innovative stereo technology, but “spatial stereo” does have an effect if you’re looking out for it. Aside from that though, it’s a good stereo for the kitchen, office or bedroom, and the WiFi chip gives you thousands of listening options.

The Skinny…

Likes – Good sound, smart design, compact unit, perfect for kitchen

Dislikes – No remote control, quite expensive
